The rise of plein air painting competitions

Plein air painting competitions bring artists together to paint outdoors, directly from the landscape, often within a designated location and a set period of time.  Rather than working from studies or photographs in the studio, artists capture the changing light, atmosphere, weather, and character of the scene in real time, making each painting a unique and immediate interpretation of place.  For collectors, these competitions offer a special opporunity to see how accomplished artists translate the same landscape through distinctly different perspectives, techniques and palettes.

Plein air painting competitions have experienced a notable resurgence in the United States over the past two decades, evolving from a regional tradition into a vibrant national movement.  For artists, the competitive format provides national exposure and recognition.  Most competitions are invitational or juried, resulting in artists competing against the best of the best in their field.

This is precisely the environment in which Rhode Island artist Jonathan McPhillips has thrived, winning multiple awards in quick succession.   As Jonathan is one of the more humble artists you will ever meet, he always tempers gratitude for acknowledgement with recognition of the talents of his fellow artists.  As he states, the 'wins' come from a combination of "good head space, an attention to scene selection, and plain old luck".  We would like to add his many years of brush time and dedication to his craft help a little too.
